Passersby may have noticed a difference on West 29th Street recently as last week's heavy snow caused the deflation of Briar Cliff University's dome near South Ridge Golf Course.

Wet, heavy snow doesn't slide off the dome and when there is a significant amount, it can cause the dome to tear away from the base, explained Nic Nelson, athletic director at Briar Cliff University.

After last Monday's approximately 12-inches of snow, a 15-foot long tear appeared along the southeast side of the dome. The structure then had to be deflated and the snow had to be removed.

This week, a specialist was brought in to repair the tear and the dome is expected to be reinflated by the end of the week, said Nelson. He added that there is a softball event scheduled for the dome this weekend, so he is hopeful that everything will stay on schedule.

Briar Cliff uses the dome for baseball, softball, gold, track, football and soccer, Nelson said. In the meantime, they have been utilizing facilities at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, the Long Lines Family Rec Center in Sioux City, and the gymnasium at Briar Cliff.

“We're just been making due with whatever location we can,” he said.
