The South Sioux City girls placed fifth and the Cardinal boys finished seventh in a tough field of competition Thursday at the Fremont Invitational cross country meet.

The Lady Cards had two runners finish with top 15 medals on the day, as Sadie Rocha finished 10th in 21:52.65 while teammate Tuenedi Villicana was about seven seconds behind in 11th place at 21:59.40.

The next three scoring runners for South Sioux City included Ruby Castillo in 24th, Ximena Alvarez in 28th and Marybeth Rasmussen finishing in 30th. Madison Newell was 38th and Belinda Garcia was 45th to round out South Sioux City’s seven varsity runners.

Zekariya Abdela earned runner-up honors to lead the South Sioux boys, finishing second in 16:41.83. He was the lone Cardinal to earn a medal on the day.

Mubarek Abdela was next to come home, finishing 36th while Said Khalif was 39th. Rounding out the SSC varsity boys were Jesus Garcia (83rd), Adam Durant (85th), Abelaziz Jama (86th) and Damian Herrera (99th).

South Sioux City runs in the Blair Invitational on Thursday and will be at the Crofton Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 20.
